Among the treasures sealed in Tutankhamun's antechamber were three ritual funerary couches — stuccoed gilded wood in the form of sacred animals, their eyes inlaid with coloured glass paste. They were placed to carry the young king on his journey into the afterlife. The most fearsome of the three depicts Ammit — "the devourer" — the composite goddess with the head of a crocodile, the forequarters of a lion, and the hindquarters of a hippopotamus.

In the Hall of Judgement, Ammit waited beside the scales while Anubis weighed each soul's heart against the feather of Ma'at. If the heart was found heavier — burdened with sin — Ammit consumed it, ending the soul's journey. She was feared rather than worshipped, but she was understood as a balancing force: the price of an unjust life.

This is a display-scale reproduction, hand-finished in Cairo by Egyptian artisans in coloured polyester with an alabaster effect. The gilded surface, the carved hippo heads at each end, and the proportions of the original couch are carried over from the Tutankhamun piece on display in Cairo.
