Serpent Neterankh | Handcrafted Egyptian Replica from Tutankhamun's Tomb

Neterankh — "the living god" — was a serpent deity who appears in the Book of That-Which-Is-in-the-Netherworld, the funerary text that guided the dead king through the twelve hours of the underworld. Neterankh stood as a gatekeeper, allowing or refusing passage through the gates of the afterlife.

This statue reproduces one of three gilded gods preserved in the "black shrines" of Tutankhamun's tomb — the small set of sacred figures placed near the king to protect him in the next world. On the black pedestal of the original, the caption gives Tutankhamun's throne name and describes him as beloved of the living god. Howard Carter found the shrines untouched when he opened the tomb in 1922.

This is a hand-finished reproduction made in Cairo by Egyptian artisans. The serpent is sculpted in polyester resin and finished in gold leaf, mounted on a wooden pedestal in the same dark-finish style as the original tomb shrine. The Tutankhamun cartouche and proportions are carried over from the piece on display in the Egyptian Museum, Cairo.
